Lucid Dreaming

Synopsis

자각몽(自覺夢)은 꿈을 꾸는 동안 갑자기 이것이 현실이 아니라는 생각이 들고,

깨어 있을 때와 마찬가지로 사고하고 분별할 수 있을 때를 말한다.

나는 어릴 때부터 가끔 이상한 꿈을 꾸곤 했는데 동그란 원형의 물체들이 사각의 벼랑 아래로 끊임없이 떨어지는 것이었다.

알 수 없는 추상의 움직임이 무한 반복되고 나는 어느 순간

이게 꿈이라는 것을 자각하게 되었지만 깰 수도 없이 그저 그 광경을 바라만 보았다.

잠에서 깬 후 나는 내가 꾸어왔던 꿈을 현실의 영상으로 만들었다.

만든 작품을 보고 있으면 내가 꿈에서 본 이미지와 내가 현실에서 만든 이미지가 연결되며 다시 자각몽를 꾸게 된다.

During ‘Lucid Dreaming,’ one realizes that the dream is not reality and is able to think and discern just as when one is awake.

Since I was young, I’ve dreamt strange dreams sometimes.

Round objects continued to fall beneath a square cliff.

The incomprehensible abstract movement continued endlessly and at one point,

I realized that it was dream, but I couldn’t wake up so I just gazed it.

After I woke up, I made it into a realistic image.

When I look at my work, the image that I saw in my dream and the image that I’ve made in reality

becomes connected, and I once again have a ‘Lucid Dreaming.

Statement

내가 꿈에서 생생하게 본 이미지들을 다시 영상화하면서 나는 자각몽을 꿀 때와 같은 경험을 하게 된다.

내가 만든 추상적인 이미지들의 질감, 색상, 형태 등은 내가 만든 것들이면서 나의 통제를 벗어난 것이기도 하다.

꿈과는 다르게 나의 신체를 움직여 이미지들을 만들어 내지만 그것들은 우연성을 가지며 스스로 독립적이기도 하다.

종이의 자연적인 질감 위에 검은 먹과 다양한 색상의 물감안료의 혼합, 그리는 과정에서의 나의 신체와 예술적 사고의 우연한 결합,

이 모든 과정들을 거쳐 만들어진 영상은 나를 다시 꿈꾸게 한다.

영상을 보고 있으면 내가 꿈에서 보았던 추상의 형태들이 연상되고 나는 지금 다시 꿈을 꾸고 있구나 하는 자각이 든다.

꿈의 자각몽과 현실의 자각몽, 나의 영상은 두 시공간 사이를 이어주며

나의 꿈에서의 깨어있는 경험을 다른 이들에게까지 확장시킨다.

As I made the images that I’ve seen in my dream, I experienced ‘Lucid Dreaming.’

The textures, colors, and shapes of the abstract images are my work, but they are no longer under my control.

Unlike my dream, the images which I’ve made myself have contingency and independence.

When the black Chinese ink and various colors of paint mix on the natural texture of the paper,

my physical and artistic speculations accidentally combine.

The images which are made through all these procedures make me dream once again.

When I watch the images, they remind me of the abstract shapes I’ve seen in my dreams, and I feel as if I’m dreaming again.

My images connect the ‘Lucid Dreaming’ which exists both in my dreams and reality,

and the awakened experience in my dreams is expanded to others.
