Synopsis
태안의 자갈 해변에 돌 하나가 있다.
이 돌은 다른 돌과 똑같아 보이지만 실은 오래 전 우주에서 온 외계생명체다.
수 만 년 간 움직이지 않고 잠자고 있던 외계의 돌은 태안의 기름유출로 검은 기름을 뒤집어쓴다.
잠에서 깬 외계의 돌은 몸을 굴리며 서해안을 따라 여행을 떠난다.
이 돌은 다른 돌과 똑같아 보이지만 실은 오래 전 우주에서 온 외계생명체다.

Here is one stone on the gravel beach, Taean.
This stone seems to be the same as other stones,
but it is alien form of life which came from outside Earth long time ago.
The alien stone, which had slept motionless for thousands of years,
was covered all over with black oil caused by oil spill by the crash of an oil tanker in Taean.
The alien stone is awakened and starts on a journey along the west coast.

태안기름유출 사건을 인간의 관점이 아닌 기름에 덮인 무생물 돌의 입장에서 애니메이션을 만들었다.
지구도 하나의 생명체로 볼 수 있듯 우주적 관점에서 무엇이 생명체이고 아닌가는 인간의 사고를 초월한다.
움직이지 않는 태안의 돌이 겪는 내적 트라우마를 4만5천 장의 사진들을 픽실레이션(Pixilation) 기법으로 영상화했다.
After Taean oil spill in South Korea, I made this animation from the stone’s point of view instead of human.
From the cosmic view, the definition of a life form is beyond human thought
as the Earth can be regarded as a life form.
Inner trauma experienced by the unmoving stone in Taean was visualized
with 45,000 photos by the technique of pixilation.

Synopsis
시카고에서 미네아폴리스로 향하는 비행기 안에서 찍은 연속 사진을 이용한 작품.
눈 덮인 광활한 대지를 드로잉 하듯 사진에 담아 애니메이션을 더했다.
하늘에서 움직이는 풍경들이 Macro와 Micro를 오가며 뷰파인더에 자동으로 그려진다.

Synopsis
제주 4.3은 '빨갱이의 섬'으로 낙인 찍힌 채 민족 분단과 이념적 대립으로 대량 학살이 자행되어
3만명 이상이 목숨을 잃은 한국현대사의 비극적인 사건이다.
이 작품은 4.3 항쟁이 처음 시작되는 1948년 4월 3일 새벽의 상황과 그 사건 속의 인물들의
감정을 추상 애니메이션으로 표현했다.
제주돌담과 팽나무 너머 새벽까지 타오르는 봉화의 불꽃은 제주도민의 무겁게 짓눌린 감정과
칠흙같이 어두운 역사의 현장을 상징적으로 밝힌다.
Jeju 4.3 is a tragic event in the modern history of Korea that took the lives of over
30,000 people, with an island being branded as “the red commie island” as
a result of a divided nation and ideology. This film describes through abstract
animation the circumstances of the early morning on April 3rd, 1948 when the 4.3
Resistance began and what went through the minds of the people involved.
The flames of the beacon burning bright until the morning over the stone walls of
Jeju light up the heavy hearts of the oppressed people of Jeju Island and the
pitch-black darkness of a historical event.
Statement
‘제주 4.3의 새벽’은 한국의 어둡고 아픈 역사를 다루고 있다. 냉전의 대립과 이념의 차이로 인해
수 많은 사람들이 목숨을 잃었고 살아남은 사람들은 아직도 그들의 흔적을 찾고 있다. 이 작품은
지금으로부터 60년 전, 1948년의 4월 3일, 제주 섬에서 일어난 억눌린 사람들의 타오르는 항쟁
의 새벽을 묘사하고 있다. 사건의 구체적인 현장묘사보다는 봉기가 일어난 새벽의 인물들의 터질
듯한 감정의 파동과 긴장을 추상적으로 애니메이션 시켜 그 당시의 떨림을 함께 하고 싶었다.
그들의 세포 감각 말단에서 꿈틀거리는 슬픔과 분노를 추상적으로 시각화하고 어둠 속에서
순간순간 보이는 사건의 꼴라주를 통해 이 작품을 보는 관객들이 제주 민중의 감정적 발화를
공감각적으로 경험하여 재구성하게 하고자 했다.
‘The Dawn of Jeju 4.3’ deals with the dark and painful part of Korean history.
The conflict of cold war and difference in ideology took away countless lives,
and those who survived are still searching for those that were killed.
This film goes back sixty years to April 3rd, 1948 and portrays the dawn of
resistance breaking in the oppressed people of Jeju Island. Rather than
describe the details of the surroundings, it utilizes abstract animation to show
the explosive, powerful feelings of the people who were at the heart of the
uprising at dawn, thereby sharing in the tense trepidations of the time.
By visualizing in an abstract way the writhing sorrow and anger lying at the
bottom of their very cells and by showing a collage of the different moments of
incident in the darkness, I hoped the film would enable the audience watching
to recreate the incident and experience first-hand the emotional ignition of the
people of Jeju.
